Forge crafty goodness...
Apr. 1st, 2007 08:47 pmAnd my hammer arm is stiff. not as bad as
3ravensringo's, but I can *feel* typing in a way I usually can't. Between us, we made 9 heavy tent stakes out of 2ft lengths of 1/2" rebar. only 8 more to go! (16 plus one spare) And then Jim worked on several of his knife projects while i Talked to
toki_warax on the cell, so that he could enjoy the "ping, ping, ping" noises of hammer on anvil, 3 time zones away... *G*
We had *several* park visitors pop their heads in the shop door during the afternoon to see what the banging was about. *G* Including 3 small boys and thier dad. Every other phrase the boys said was : "What's THAT?". LOL but we explained the group, and what the shop was for, showed a bit of what we were doing.
The hardest part was pointing the the be-durned stakes. Putting the bend in the top was easy-peasy. Heat, stick in vise, BEND. Tap once or twice with hammer. Quench.
The points were: heat. WHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACK. Notice that it's too cold. Heat. WHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACK. heat. WHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACK. heat. Notice that its too cold again. WHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACKWHACK. heat. TAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAP. heat. TAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAP. decide that its close enough to a point to scare the dirt. Stick it in a bucket of water to cool it off. :::fwoooooooshhhhh::::
Repeat 9 times. ow.
While jim was working with his knife projects, I got to see oil quenching. The vegtable oil tends to burn a tad dramatically sometimes as the *red-hot steel* goes in. =:o
After that, we went to get some dinner, and discovered an out-of-the-way tiny Thai place with yummy food. The pad Thai was *orange* (with chili oil) as it *should* be. Tasty, unpretentious, Inexpensive thai food. mmmmmm.
Ghin Na Rhee Restaurant
2509 N. Harrison Street
mmmmmmmm. I've not had proper pad thai with *spices* in it for years. So many local thai places "bland down" this dish to fit percived timid american palates, until it's just plain rice noodles with chopped peanuts and sprouts. *sigh*.
The tent stakes are for my panther pavillion top. I made sticks and strings for it years ago , but the stakes were always the lame things I got at the camp store that barely worked.
Lame stakes no more. Hell i may even buy *sides* for this thing. Not like I go to pennsic or anything, but I enjoy having this tent, because it's just *cool*.
nite nite!
