the end of an era...
Jan. 21st, 2008 08:26 amEver since I bought my then-underage hubbie his first beer back in 1991,
theeravensringo and I have bonded over mutual beer-snobbery. "Quality over quantity" was our motto.
One of the first places we went in Clarendon to enjoy some tasty interesting beer was Amdo Rodeo. It was a little joint that lived in the store front that is now Iota, across the street from Roratonga Rodeo (now Galaxy Hut). The demi-amusing story is was that Roratonga Rodeo had been opened by a couple, who the split, and the guy ended up opening a simliar bar across the street from the first one! Yummy food, and good beers. Yay blue corn chip nachos!
A couple of years later, Amdo closed, and re-opened in an old car dealership down the street, as Bardo Rodeo. It was a full on-site brewpub, with many fine products that i loved. It had a car installed to look like it was crashing thru the window. And pool tables, *lots* of pool tables. And weirdly, art-ily painted walls, floors ceilings, and anything else that couldn't move out of the way of the brush.
And good beer. MMM. I fondly remember Tibetan Bigfoot Ale, Graceland Imperial Stout, White Lightning Barelywine, and the damn fine hard cider they'd make when the mood struck them.
(Noted for future reference, *never* buy a whole pitcher of barleywine. Even if it's on special. You WILL NOT be able to finish it and still walk. We gave half of ours to another table.)
A few years back, the place contracted a bit, and renamed itself Dr. Dremo's. We've not been in a while. But I now hear that it's space has been bought by developers, and Dr. Dremos is closing as of Jan 27. Theoretically they are hunting for a new space, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to happen.
So tonite, We're going down there around 6:30 for a couple of James Brown's, bar food and to play pool long enough to sober up.
Folks are welcome to join us if you like, but i can't guarantee that the joint wont be carpet-bombed with sentimentalists like myself. Nothing formal, no reservations, it's just Where We'll Be.
Reminiscing over a couple of Very Good Beers.
I will recognize whatever appears as my projection and know it to be a vision of the Bardo
